Get Rid of Chafing and Have That Smooth Skin You Deserve

Our skin plays a very vital role in beauty as well as in protection against trauma, microorganisms and harmful radiation such as the UV rays. When it gets irritated and sore, it leaves us with less of the protection and more a discomfort and of a concern, having a skin less glowing and less attractive. Skin chafing can happen to everyone, more especially mild chaffing as a result of weather, exposure to skin irritants and rubbing of a wrong fabric onto the skin.

A good prevention measure is to wear a soft fabric rather than a rougher one as represented by synthetic blend and wool. Mild chafing can easily be resolved by simply applying an ample amount of talc or baby powder at times. For other cases wherein chaffing can no longer be hidden and really causes a certain degree of discomfort, here is what you can do.

a. Use zinc oxide. It is white pasty cream that is simple and inexpensive, and a very good cure for chafing. According to the dermatologist John F. Romano from the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, a thin application of zinc oxide to the areas where there is usually chafing is effective in preventing and resolving the problem. In addition, a mineral oil or olive oil can be used to wipe it off and remove this sticky paste afterward.

b. Moisten the area with a layer of petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly provides a good protection against friction. It can be used prior to exercise on sensitive body parts such as nipples, shoe soles, upper arms and those that are observed to be chafing more frequently.

c. Avoid the use of pantyhose as these do not allow your skin on the upper legs or thighs to breath. Also, avoid tight fitting undergarments such as the male and female briefs wherein the waist gets suffocated and irritated due to its tight elasticity. Opt to use boxers or cotton panties with normally fitting waste anchor.

c. For those who are obese, it is advisable to use elastic bandages on the areas prone to rubbing or friction. This will act as a skin protection, prevent skin irritation and promote a good skin integrity.  Make sure that the application of the elastic bandage usually on the upper thighs and waists are secured but not too tight as this will impair the blood circulation on the distal areas of the legs.
