Disney Channel actress Bella Thorne is probably nearly as well known for her struggles to get on top of her cystic acne as she is for her acting endeavors. She recently released a video for Vogue in which she takes viewers through her daily Bella Thorne skincare routine. The video, aptly titled “Bella Thorne’s to Guide to Acne-Prone Skin Care and Glitter Eyes” briefly mentions some of the treatments she’s had in the past. They sound painful, and in some cases downright intrusive. Think laser treatments, dermabrasion and so on….
Bella certainly admits to the laser treatments, claiming ‘every laser you can name, I’ve done it.’ Her graphic comment about ‘tearing off parts of your face’ lead us to suspect that she’s also gone down the dermabrasion path, and likely experimented with CO2 laser skin resurfacing (aka burning) as well. Ouch! She’s also tried vampire facials, which sounds gruesome but actually has a sound philosophy behind it.
Vampire facials utilize PRP, or platelet rich plasma, therapy. PRP therapy involves using the platelet component of your own blood to improve and speed up healing. Platelets, as part of the immune system, activate a huge range of healing processes. Increasing their presence around the site of an injury can considerably speed these up. PRP for example has been used in sports medicine for some time. It’s also becoming popular as a hair loss treatment in its own right or as an adjunct to hair transplants.
Bella can probably take some (cold) comfort in the fact that she definitely isn’t alone in her struggles with acne. Around 80% of the world’s populace has experienced some type of acne at some stage in their lives. It is in fact the most common skin disorder dermatologists treat. However, when it comes to what actually works – Bella appears to have found out, by trying everything, that what works for some people doesn’t work for others.
In the end, she simply went back to basics and discovered that for her, minimal truly is the best skincare routine. These days she makes a point of not washing her face in the mornings. This advice may fly in the face of every skincare tip you’ve ever read or heard about but, like PRP therapy, there is logic behind it. Over cleaning skin can be detrimental to its health and well-being. First, it can remove the protective surface barrier, leaving the skin vulnerable to bacteria. Second, it can dry skin out, causing a compensatory increase in sebum production. Combine the two and you have an environment where bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes can multiply and get trapped underneath the excess sebum.
So for Bella Thorne, the daily skincare routine starts with the application of makeup onto unwashed skin. She uses a very light foundation that doesn’t undo the benefits of not washing her face then dots, not swipes, a concealing liquid onto those famous acne scars. This is followed by whatever makeup she requires for the day ahead. Incidentally, out of respect for her skin, she also does her own makeup on set as well.
